Actitudes y percepciones sociales ante el jaguar (Panthera onca) en el noroeste argentino

Abstract

En Argentina, el jaguar (Panthera onca), es considerado un problema por la mayoría de las personas con las que comparte el paisaje. Entender la percepción social sobre los grandes depredadores y los factores que influyen sobre ésta, es importante para la conservación de estas especies. Se entrevistaron (753) personas que viven en la zona de amortiguamiento de nueve áreas protegidas en el noroeste de Argentina. Los resultados demuestran que las interacciones entre los factores socioeconómicos y las actitudes son específicas al contexto local, no son obvias y no responden necesariamente a lo esperado según otros estudios. En general, se observó escaso conocimiento sobre la situación y la biología de la especie, así como su rol ecológico y su potencial rol de atracción turística. En cuanto a actitudes y percepciones, se observaron tendencias casi contradictorias; por un lado, los entrevistados expresaron no estar de acuerdo con esfuerzos de conservación del jaguar, y por otro lado manifestaron que se sentirían tristes si la especie desaparece. La ocupación principal del entrevistado parece ser el factor que más influye en las diferencias de las percepciones y actitudes.

In Argentina, the jaguar (Panthera onca) is considered a problem by the majority of people that share the landscape with the species. Understanding the social perceptions on large predators and the factors that influence them is important for the conservation of these species. We interviewed (753) local people around nine protected areas in north-western Argentina. Results show that the interactions between socio-economic factors and attitudes are specific to the local context, are not obvious, and do not necessarily respond to what is expected according to other studies. In general, there was little knowledge on the status and biology of the species, as well as on its ecological role and potential for tourism attraction. With regards to attitudes and perceptions, contradictory trends were observed; on one hand, people expressed disagreement with jaguar conservation efforts, and on the other hand, people expressed that they would feel sad if the species disappears. The main occupation of the interviewee appears to be the factor that most influences the differences in perceptions and attitudes.
