dc.description.abstract

This paper studies the sociodiscursive representations about the transvestite and transgender collective in two discourses about actions of assistance aimed at this social collective in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, in the context of the quarantine due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Both discourses were taken from the web: the first belongs to the website of the City’s Government and the second to the website of the Mocha Celis Transvestite-Trans Popular Baccalaureate. The theoretical frame is Critical Discourse Analysis, the methodology is qualitative and inductive and the paradigm adopted for the research is the interpretative. The methods employed for the analysis are the Synchronic-Diachronic Method for the Linguistic Analysis of Texts and the Method of Convergent Linguistic Approaches for Critical Discourse Analysis. By applying these methods to the corpus we were able to describe and interpret the construction of three sociodiscursive representations: 1) the representation of the social subjects that produced the analyzed discourses (the City’s Government and the Mocha Celis Baccalaureate), 2) their degree of involvement with the population affected by the quarantine and 3) the representation of the transvestite and transgender collective. Concerning these points, we conclude that: 1) in both cases, the social subject that produced each discourse is discursively constructed in a reinforced way, as an “omnipresent” and efficacious agent, although, in the case of the City’s Government, this construction coexists with the mitigation of the actions aimed at the transgender collective; 2) in the discourse of the City’s Government there is a prevailing objectivity claim, achieved through descriptions that imply a certain distance from the population, while the Mocha Celis Baccalaureate’s discourse constructs a greater degree of involvement through explicit subjectivity marks; 3) in both discourses, the sociodiscursive representation of the transgender collective is built around passivity and vulnerability; in the discourse of the City’s Government, there is also a linguistic strategy whose effect is essentializing this collective’s situation of social exclusion.
