Estudiar las crónicas mestizas: Avatares de una tesis

Abstract

Recientemente, he defendido mi tesis de Maestría titulada “Tradición indígena, tradición occidental: tensiones en las crónicas mestizas de Juan Bautista Pomar, Diego Muñoz Camargo y Cristóbal del Castillo (México, siglo XVI)”. En ella, me ocupo de tres textos sobre la conquista de México que presentan similitudes temáticas y estilísticas pero, también, diferencias representativas del oscilante sujeto de enunciación que caracteriza toda crónica mestiza. Además de las dificultades propias de la complejidad de este tipo de crónicas (poco analizadas desde una perspectiva retóricoliteraria), a lo largo de mi investigación han surgido otras que no esperaba encontrar. Comparto, en este trabajo, dichas dificultades y la resolución metodológica por la que opté para cada caso.

I have recently defended my master thesis entitled “Indigenous tradition, occidental tradition: tensions in the mestizo chronicles written by Juan Bautista Pomar, Diego Muñoz Camargo and Cristóbal del Castillo (Mexico, 16th century)”. In my work, I deal with three texts about the conquest of Mexico, which present thematic and stylistic similarities but also representative differences in the changing subject of enunciation that characterizes every mestizo chronicle. Apart from the typical difficulties which arise from the complexity of this type of chronicles (scarcely analyzed from a rethorical/literary perspective), other unexpected difficulties appeared throughout my research. In this paper I set out to share what I found and the methodological solution I chose in each case.
