Representaciones estadísticas de la vejez: Argentina, 1869-1947

Abstract

El texto estudia las representaciones estadísticas de la vejez presentes en los cuatro primeros censos nacionales de población de la Argentina (1869, 1895, 1914 y 1947). Para ello indaga las clasificaciones propuestas para definir y segmentar las etapas de la vida humana (desde la niñez hasta la vejez), los debates sobre la edad de inicio de la vejez y las percepciones positivas o negativas sobre esa etapa. La exégesis de los mecanismos de construcción del discurso censal (preguntas en el terreno, elaboración de cuadros, construcción de clasificaciones y comentarios) permite percibir las influencias teóricas internacionales y la progresiva emergencia del envejecimiento demográfico en tanto problema científico y político. Por último se reflexiona sobre algunos de los límites de la teoría del envejecimiento (en particular, la asociación entre vejez y niveles de actividad laboral) a partir de su inscripción en la tradición histórica de larga data sobre clases de edad.

The text examines the statistical representations of old age in relation to the first four national censuses of Argentina (1869, 1895, 1914 and 1947). In order to do so, the classifications proposed to define and segment the stages of human life (from childhood to old age) are analyzed, as well as the discussions on the age of the onset of old age and the positive or negative perceptions on that stage. The exegesis of the mechanisms of census discourse construction (field questions, chart elaboration, the construction of classifications and comments) suggests the influence of international theories and the progressive emergence of demographic ageing as a scientific and political problem. Finally, some of the limits of the theory of ageing are considered (particularly, the association between old age and level of working activity) since its appearance in the old historical tradition of age classes.
