Diferencias en orientación temporal entre estudiantes universitarias Mexicanas y Argentinas

Abstract

La orientación temporal ‒al pasado, presente o futuro– es una variable de relevancia en cuanto ejerce una influencia dinámica en variados aspectos de la conducta humana. Si bien se dispone de un cuerpo cuantioso de investigaciones a partir del artículo seminal de Zimbardo y Boyd (1999), en América Latina ‒a excepción del estudio de González Lomelí et al. (2018) que compara estudiantes mexicanos y colombianos‒ se trata de trabajos circunscriptos a los distintos países. El presente estudio se ordena a explorar las diferencias entre perfiles de orientación temporal en estudiantes argentinas y mexicanas de nivel universitario (muestra de 307 participantes, 39% argentinas y 61% mexicanas, en un rango de 17 a 35 años). Para ello, se aplicó el Inventario de Perspectiva Temporal de Zimbardo (ZTPI – Zimbardo y Boyd, 1999), algunos ítems del Cuestionario de Perspectiva Temporal Futura Trascendental (TFTPI – Boyd y Zimbardo, 1997) y otros elaborados ad hoc. Se realizó análisis de variancia (ANOVA), pruebas de diferencia de proporciones independientes y análisis de conglomerados de k medias. Los resultados muestran que se conforman tres perfiles de orientación temporal ‒el Adaptativo Trascendente, el Intermedio y el HedonistaFatalista‒, los cuales responden a características culturales.

Time orientation ‒to the past, present or future‒ is a variable of relevance insofar as it exerts a dynamic influence on various aspects of human behavior. Although there is a large body of research available from the seminal article by Zimbardo and Boyd (1999), in Latin America ‒with the exception of the study by González Lomelí et al. (2018) that compares Mexican and Colombian students‒ these are works circumscribed to the different countries. The present study is aimed to explore the differences between profiles of time orientation in Argentinian and Mexican students of university level (sample of 307 participants, 39% Argentine and 61% Mexican, in a range of 17 to 35 years). For this, were applied the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZTPI - Zimbardo y Boyd, 1999), some items of the Transcendental Future Time Perspective Inventory (TFTPI - Boyd y Zimbardo, 1997) and others developed ad hoc. Analysis of variance (ANOVA), difference tests of two independent proportions and k-means cluster analysis were performed. The results show that three profiles of time orientation are formed, the Adaptive Transcendental, the Intermediate and the Hedonist-Fatalist, which respond to cultural characteristics.
