Dislocamientos y pugnas irresolubles: la representación de la identidad boliviana en Ukamau (Jorge Sanjinés, 1966)

Abstract

Este artículo describe y analiza cómo se representa la identidad local en Ukamau (Jorge Sanjinés, 1966) y el modo en que se exhibe el carácter abigarrado de la sociedad boliviana. Dialogando con un extenso corpus crítico, propongo otra vía de lectura a la conjunción de materiales y procedimientos diversos que caracteriza la película —habitualmente entendida como disonante–, subrayando su capacidad para interrogar con audacia el problema de la identidad nacional. La primera parte del texto explica las condiciones históricas en las cuales se produce y estrena la cinta, la segunda propone una perspectiva teórica considerando centrales las ideas de sociedad abigarrada, heterogeneidad y figuraciones ch’ixi; y la última avanza en la lectura de las dimensiones temática, visual, narrativa y estética del film.

This article describes and analyzes how local identity is represented in Ukamau (Jorge Sanjinés, 1966) and the way in which the variegated character of Bolivian society is exhibited. Dialoguing with an extensive critical corpus, I propose another way of reading the conjunction of diverse materials and procedures that characterizes the film —usually understood as dissonant–, underscoring its capacity to interrogate with audacity the problem of national identity. The first part of the text explains the historical conditions in which the film is produced and premiered, the second proposes a theoretical perspective considering as central the ideas of variegated society, heterogeneity and ch'ixi figurations; and the last one advances in the reading of the thematic, visual, narrative and aesthetic dimensions of the film
