dc.description.abstract
Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) has only been so far exploited as a seed-producing plant for human and animal nourishment. However, it may become a potential source of natural atoxic pigments by means of an optimization of crop conditions. We carried out a study in order to know the effect of intrinsic and extrinsic factors on the production of betacyanins in quinoa seedlings. Results obtained revealed that the biosynthesis of betacyanins at a cotyledon level is not light-dependent, whereas for hypocotyle light is an essential requirement. Although, the regulatory mechanisms of betacyanins production are unknown, the evidence reported in this work would prove the existence of a certain type of mechanism mediated by growth regulators and dependent on the kind radiation. Thus, while fluorescent light exhibited and inducing effect on biosynthesis, green radiation, UV-A and UV-B showed an inhibiting effect. Results obtained allow us to assume that unlike what occurs with flavonoids and antocyanins, betacyanins would not play any protective role against UV-B radiation. The probable role of betacyanins is here discussed
