La historia global y la historia de la población

Abstract

El texto analiza las ventajas y problemas para el estudio de la historia de la población latinoamericana derivadas de la aplicación de los enfoques conocidos como historia global e historia transnacional, con especial referencia a esta última. Para ello recorre, en primer lugar, los límites impuestos por el Estado-Nación al estudio de las poblaciones del pasado y la necesidad de superar el marco estatal, utilizando para ello ejemplos de dos áreas en cierto sentido extremas: las migraciones internacionales y la historia de los sistemas estadísticos nacionales. La segunda y tercera parte se concentran en las dudas que plantea la historia global, con especial referencia a su grado de novedad y utilidad en relación a métodos clásicos como la comparación y la teoría de sistemas. Por último, y partiendo de la necesidad de combinar escalas de análisis de diferente nivel, se propone un agenda de temas socio-demográficos para los que el enfoque global podría resultar relevante.

The text analyses the advantages and problems for the study of Latin American history resulting from the application of two approaches known as global history and transnational history, with special reference to the latter. It therefore considers, in the first place, the limits imposed by the State- Nation to the study of the past populations and the need to overcome the state approach, making reference to examples from two somehow extreme areas: international migrations and the history of the national statistics systems. The second and third parts focus on the doubts offered by global history, with special reference to its degree of novelty and usefulness in relation to classical methods like comparison and the theory of systems. Finally, and considering the need to combine scales of analysis of different level, an agenda of socio- demographic topics is proposed for which the global approach might be relevant.
