El Quijote y el Emperador de la China: los derroteros del libro

Abstract

La dedicatoria al conde de Lemos, una de las piezas preliminares del Quijote de 1615, incluye una pequeña anécdota apócrifa: la de la visita de un emisario del emperador chino a Cervantes. El ofrecimiento que éste le hace, a través de una carta, para que visite el imperio allende al mar, se revela insuficiente y da pie al elogio del poderoso a quien se le envía la obra. La pequeña historia no es inocente. En el umbral de la novela a la que da comienzo, se proyecta sobre su totalidad y plantea varias cuestiones de gran importancia para esta Segunda Parte. En primer lugar, la centralidad de la materialidad escrita y la importancia de la tradición en la que se inserta la propia obra. Y, finalmente, porque detrás de los intercambios librescos y epistolares es posible, en el imaginario de la España áurea, el encuentro con ese Otro, el chino, un sujeto imperial como el que habitaba los territorios de los Austrias, frente al que se depositará el tratamiento ambivalente del diferente: de sujeto digno de admiración a peligroso antagonista.

The dedication to the Count of Lemos, a preliminary text from Part II of Cervantes’ Don Quixote (1615), includes a false anecdote, a brief story of how a Chinese Emperor messenger visits our author. Through a letter, the monarch invites him to travel to the far and foreign lands, but the unsatisfactory of the offer sets the conditions for the praise of the powerful figure to whom is the novel finally dedicated. This short story is not an innocent one. In the liminary position in which we find it, at the work’s opening pages, it displays some very relevant themes for this second volume. First, the importance of writing in a material aspect and the tradition in which this very literary work locates itself. And, finally, because book and letter exchanges let us observe the way Spanish Golden Age imagines the meeting with the otherness –a Chinese, an imperial subject, a mirror for who were ruled by the Habsburgs; a holder for the ambivalent ways of thinking about the Other, from admiration to a sense of danger.
