Biliary secretion and hepatic oxidative stress in animals fed with linoleic acid conjugates (CLA)

The purpose of this work was to investigate the effects of CLA at two levels (7 and 20%) of dietary fat on biliary secretion and oxidative stress in liver of rats. Animals were divided in four groups and fed with diets, supplemented or not with CLA during 30 days. After this time, we analyzed “in vivo” bile flow by canulation of bile duct and collecting bile during 1 hour. In bile, we evaluated biliary acids, proteins, phospholipids and cholesterol concentrations. Furthermore, we determinate in liver homogenates oxidative stress parameters. The results of this experiment demonstrated that at both dietary fat levels, CLA increased bile flow (40% and more than 50% in recommended and high fat levels, respectively). This was accompanied by an increase in biliary acids and protein secretion rates without significant changes in oxidative stress parameters. It can be concluded that at both dietary fat levels CLA increases the fractional bile flow dependent of biliary acids. This can be related with peroxisomal proliferative activity of CLA that, stimulating β-oxidation, could produce a bigger flow of Acetil-Co A which is a precursor of bile acids synthesis.
