Etnonimia wichí: Cien hipótesis para mil y un nombres

Abstract

El artículo rastrea los diversos nombres que sirvieron para designar a los wichís y weenhayek del Chaco central argentino y boliviano, desde el s. XVII hasta la actualidad. A medida que avanza la conquista y colonización del área, estos nombres pasan de términos vagos, genéricos y multiétnicos a nombres que refieren a un único complejo etnolingüístico y, finalmente, a sectores relativamente grandes de ese “complejo”. Se muestra que el uso de “wichí” y “weenhayek” para designar, respectivamente, a los grupos argentinos y bolivianos es bastante reciente: donde existían un “complejo étnico” y un “continuum lingüístico”, las organizaciones religiosas y los antropólogos identificaron “pueblos” y “lenguas”, y luego la academia, las ONG y los Estados consagran, anquilosan y difunden estas etiquetas como etnónimos.

The paper tracks several names that designated the Wichí and Weenhayek of the Argentinian and Bolivian Chaco since the 17th century. With the conquest and colonization of the region, these vague, generic and multi-ethnic labels gradually started to designate certain ethnolinguistic complexes, and even relatively vast portions of those complexes. The paper shows that the use of “Wichí” and “Weenhayek” to name, respectively, Argentina and Bolivia groups is quite recent: where there was only an ethnic complex and a linguistic continuum, religious organizations and anthropologists identified “nations” and “languages”, and then the agendas of academy, NGOs and the State spread the use of these labels as ethnonyms.
