La literatura jesuítica novohispana y los géneros literarios

Abstract

En América, el hecho literario más importante que se va gestando en el arco temporal que va desde el siglo XVI hasta mediados del siglo XVIII es la renovación neoclásica, en la que se reconoce el esfuerzo de la Compañía de Jesús por explicar, traducir e imitar a los poetas latinos, sobre todo, y por restaurar el gusto clásico en cuanto a armonía, proporción y claridad. Los jesuitas llevan adelante un programa literario marcado por la necesidad de continuar y recrear el canon ya existente, dentro del cual el género bucólico, la poesía didáctica y la prosa literaria ocupan un sitial de excelencia. Los jesuitas novohispanos practican los géneros antiguos, pero en el interior de cada género se produce un fenómeno de adaptación y ampliación notables. La mayor innovación de estos autores consiste, pues, en interrogar el paradigma clásico de los géneros literarios para integrarlo al contexto de una nueva realidad y resignificarlo en el marco del proceso de construcción de un espacio de autoridad e independencia cultural.

In America, the most important literary from 16th century until mid-eighteenth century is the neoclassical renovation, which recognizes the efforts of the Society of Jesus to explain, translate and imitate the Latin poets and to restore the classic taste in harmony, proportion and clarity. The Jesuits have a literary program marked by the need to continue and recreate the classic canon. The pastoral genre, didactic poetry and literary prose occupy a place of excellence. The Jesuits of New Spain practice ancient genres by means of an adaptation process and significant expansion. The greatest innovation of these authors is the integration of literary genres in the context of a new reality and the building of a space of authority and cultural independence.
