Post Scriptum a La fábrica de las cifras oficiales del Estado Argentino (1869-1947)

Abstract

Este artículo revisa, abunda y complementa los resultados de la investigación publicada La fábrica de las cifras Oficiales del Estado Argentino (1869-1947). A partir de los cuestionarios estadísticos censales el autor revisa nuestras actuales percepciones sobre el poder y la legitimidad estatal. Valiéndose de la sociología histórica y la microhistoria, el artículo busca desentrañar la composición y características de la esfera técnica estatal a la hora producir números oficiales entre fines del siglo XIX y principios del siglo XX. Se revisan así los significados políticos y culturales del cuantificar y producir largas series de datos; se revela así cuánto el Estado es un agente polifacético, irregular y heterogéneo, con ritmos de desarrollo asincrónicos y discontinuos en sus intervenciones sobre la sociedad civil, la economía y la geografía nacional. Detrás de un supuesto Estado potente aparece vigorosa una comunidad de analistas; una red de trabajo jerarquizado y visible, integrada por un personal con diferentes destrezas y poderes que crearon una empresa estatal de conocimiento, con una visión oficial del mundo económico y de las relaciones políticas.

This article revises, expands and complements the results of the research published (in Spanish) under the title La fábrica de las cifras Oficiales del Estado Argentino (1869-1947) (“The Factory of Official Figures of the Argentinian State, 1869-1947”). Departing from the census statistical questionnaires, the author examines our current perceptions of State legitimacy and power. By means of historical sociology and microhistory, the article looks to unearth the composition and characteristics of the State’s technical sphere when it comes to their production of official figures between the end of the 19th century and the early 20th century. The political and cultural meanings of quantifying and producing large amounts of data are analyzed in a way that reveals the extent to which the State is a multifaceted, irregular, and heterogeneous agent who suffers asynchronous and discontinuous rhythms of development in its interventions on civil society, the economy, and national geography. Behind a supposedly powerful State appears a vigorous community of analysts, a hierarchical and visible labor network made of people of different abilities and capabilities who created a State enterprise of knowledge with an official vision of the economic world and political relations.
