Alimentación natural de Austromegabalanus psittacus(Molina 1782) (Cirripedia:Balanidae) en el golfo san Jorge (Chubut, Argentina)

Abstract

Se analizó la dieta natural del cirripedio gigante Austromegabalanus psittacus (Molina, 1782) “picoroco” en el Golfo San José, Chubut, sur de Argentina. La especie es un filtrador omnívoro, consumiendo gran parte de de la oferta ambiental. No obstante, tiene algún grado de selectividad dado que se verificaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre la frecuencia de los ítemes del contenido del tubo digestivo y aquellos presentes en la columna de agua (χ2= 1136.31; gl = 8; p<0.0001). Las microalgas típicamente planctónicas fueron más abundantes en la dieta que aquellas asociadas al bentos (χ2= 26.3; gl = 1; p<0.001) y la fracción algal fue mayor que la fracción animal, por lo cual la dieta es preferentemente fitoplanctónica. Debido a que esta especie tiene potencial económico y en Chile es explotada artesanalmente y en cultivos a escala piloto, los resultados de este estudio podrían ser aplicados a su eventual uso en Argentina.

The natural diet of the giant barnacle Austromegabalanus psittacus (Molina, 1782) “picoroco” was analysed in the Gulf of San José, Chubut, southern Argentina. The species is an omnivorous filter feeder that consumes the majority of resources available in the environment. However, it has some degree of selectivity, as statistically significant differences were verified between frequencies of items found in the digestive tract content and those present in the water column (c2 = 1136.31; gl = 8; p<0.0001). Typically planktonic microalgae were more abundant in the diet than those associated with the benthos (c2 = 26.3; gl = 1; p<0.001) and the vegetal fraction was greater than the animal fraction, resulting in a preferentially phytoplankton diet. Because this species has economic potential, in Chile is exploited by artisanal fisheries, and pilot scale cultures. In view of this, the results of the present study could be applied to the possible use of the “picoroco” in Argentina.
