Discontinuar los estudios en la universidad: un estudio comparativo sobre la experiencia del abandono en cuatro carreras de la Universidad de Buenos Aires

Abstract

En esta tesis doctoral abordamos el fenómeno de la discontinuidad de los estudios universitarios en cuatro carreras de la Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA) focalizando en las culturas institucionales, aspectos del orden de las representaciones que definen tipos específicos de abandono, elementos del orden estructural que aparecen en los relatos, y las lecturas retrospectivas que los sujetos hacen sobre su trayectoria al momento de la entrevista. Con este objetivo analizamos la experiencia estudiantil a través de los relatos (Berteaux, 2005) de jóvenes que hayan discontinuado sus estudios superiores en la Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA) entre los años 2005 y 2015 en cuatro carreras con alto porcentaje de deserción: Ingeniería en Informática, Ciencias Antropológicas, Ciencias Químicas y Ciencias de la Comunicación. El decenio elegido responde a un período relativamente estable en la Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA) en términos de niveles de inscripción estudiantil, tasas de graduación e inversión del estado en las universidades según información provista por la Secretaría de Políticas Universitarias. El uso del concepto de discontinuidad por sobre los más extendidos, como abandono o deserción, busca discutir con la mirada centrada en la responsabilización hacia el estudiante y se opone al carácter punitivista de dicha apreciación, es decir, la mirada que califica a la graduación como éxito y al abandono como fracaso.

The doctoral thesis studies the phenomenon of the discontinuation of university studies within four courses at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA), with a focus on the institutional logics, the cultures of the disciplines, and aspects of the order of the previous representations on higher education. We understand that these aspects are not considered in the studies that investigate the most structural dimension of the phenomenon. With this objective in mind, the student experience is analyzed through life stories (Berteaux, 2005) of young people who have discontinued their studies at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) in four courses with a high percentage of attrition between the years 2005-2015: Computer Engineering, Anthropological Sciences, Chemical Sciences and Communication Sciences. The chosen decade reflects a relatively stable period in UBA regarding enrollment, abandonment, and investment rates, according to information provided by the Secretariat of University Policies. The use of the concept of discontinuation over others (such as abandonment or desertion) forwards a perspective that puts the responsibility of the phenomenon on the student. In addition, this concept contrasts with the punitive nature of the appreciation of this phenomenon, which labels graduation as success and abandonment as a failure.
