Saberes antiguos para problemas modernos: melancolía y filosofía moral en los ensayos de William Temple

Abstract

Hacia fines del siglo XVII, comenzó a difundirse en Europa la idea de que la melancolía, y particularmente un subtipo de ella, el spleen, era un “mal inglés”. Este artículo explora una serie de ensayos de William Temple en los cuales se habla del spleen. En ellos, el autor elaboró críticas y recomendaciones para mejorar la salud del cuerpo físico y social a partir del lenguaje y los saberes de la filosofía moral. Argumentando que la melancolía en esa época constituía un objeto polémico, se procurará indagar en los usos que Temple hizo de aquél para defender las virtudes clásicas en la Querella entre los Antiguos y los Modernos. Al mismo tiempo, se procurará dar cuenta de qué valores antiguos consideraba necesarios para combatir la melancolía de los ingleses modernos, y en términos más generales, cómo concebía a la modernidad.

By the late 17th century, it started to spread in Europe the idea that melancholy, and particularly a subtype of it, the spleen, was an “English malady”. This article explores a series of essays by William Temple in which he talked about the spleen. There he posed criticisms and recommendations to improve the health of the physical and social body employing the language and knowledges of moral philosophy. Arguing that at that time melancholy was a polemical object, this paper will look into the uses that Temple made of if it in his defense of the ancient virtues within the Quarrel of the Ancients and the Moderns. At the same time, it will show which ancient values he thought were necessary to fight the melancholy of modern English men and women and, more broadly, how he understood modernity.
