Redemption through knowledge: The Ismāī‘lī reading of the Neoplatonic metaphysics in the Kitāb al-Yanābīʻ of Abū Yaʻqūb al-Sijistānī (4th century H./10th century C.E.)

Los escritos de Abū Yaʻqūb al-Sijistānī representan uno de los más destacados ejemplos de una lectura ismaī‘lī de las doctrinas neoplatónicas. En su Kitāb al-Yanābīʻ se encuentra una dicotomía. Si bien la “mediación” es la principal característica de la realidad actual, cierto acceso “directo” a la dimensión inteligible es vista como posible, para todo ser humano, en cualquier momento. Sin embargo, ambas perspectivas parecen ser incompatibles. Si un ser humano puede alcanzar la dimensión universal sin mediación alguna salvo su propia alma, ¿por qué debería entonces “participar” en la daʻwa al-ʼismāʻīliyya?

Abū Yaʻqūb al-Sijistānī’s works might be considered as some of the most clear examples of an Ismaī‘lī reading of the Neoplatonic doctrines. In his Kitāb alYanābīʻ there is a dichotomy: even if “mediation” is the main characteristic of the present reality, it seems that some kind of “direct” access to the spiritual dimension is possible for all humans at any moment. Both perspectives seem incompatible: if a human being can reach the universal dimension without any intermediation but his own soul, why would he need to “participate” in the daʻwa al-ʼismāʻīliyya?
