La representación fotográfica de las sociedades indígenas del sur patagónico entre 1860 y 1910

Abstract

El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo acercarnos a las formas de representación del indígena patagónico a través del registro fotográfico disponible a partir de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Lejos de pensar en la objetividad de la cámara, creemos que estas imágenes están mediadas por la mirada de quienes las tomaron y, obviamente, en estrecha relación con la pertenencia socio-cultural del autor y con el contexto socio-histórico de su época. Desde el punto de vista formal, las fotografías reproducen los cánones estilísticos vigentes en Europa y se ajustan a ciertos modelos que representan los gustos del momento. Por una parte, existe la necesidad de dotar a las imágenes de verosimilitud, acompañándolas de elementos que las muestren con realismo histórico, pero por otro lado, se trata de matizar aquellos aspectos que alejan a la imagen de los ideales estéticos vigentes. Trataremos de ver, a través del análisis fotográfico, cómo estos elementos se encuentran reflejados en el tratamiento de la fotografías de los indígenas del sur patagónico y, adicionalmente, intentaremos visualizar si hubo diferencias de género en las representaciones.

This work aims to approach the forms of representation of the Patagonian indigenous through the photographic record available from the second half of the nineteenth century. Far from thinking about the objectivity of the camera, we believe that these images are mediated by the eyes of those who took them and, obviously, in close relation with the socio-cultural belonging of the author and the socio-historical context of his time. From the formal point of view, the photographs reproduce the stylistic standards in force in Europe and conform to certain models that represent the tastes of the moment. On the one hand, there is a need to equip images with verisimilitude, accompanied by elements that show them with historical realism, but on the other hand, it is a matter of refining those aspects that distract from the image of the current aesthetic ideals. We will try to see, through the photographic analysis, how these elements are reflected in the treatment of the photographs of the natives of southern Patagonia and, in addition, we will try to visualize if there were differences of gender in the representation.
