"Más necesaria en el hogar que en el laboratorio": Una mirada sobre la mujer, el hombre y las ciencias en la Argentina (1946)

Abstract

El presente trabajo aborda dos ensayos que focalizan una particular mirada sobre la mujer casada y sus posibles relaciones con la actividad científica y con el hombre de ciencias hacia mediados del siglo XX en la Argentina. Se trata de los textos "La esposa del hombre de ciencias" y "La mujer casada y la investigación científica", formulados por Olive Thomas de Lewis, esposa de John Treharne Lewis, fisiólogo, discípulo de Bernardo Houssay y miembro de la Asociación Argentina para el Progreso de las Ciencias (AAPC). Los ensayos fueron publicados en enero y agosto de 1946 en la revista Ciencia e Investigación, órgano de difusión de la AAPC. Una vez contextualizada la revista, el artículo indaga en la representación de la mujer y su posible vinculación con la actividad científica, así como su papel esperado como esposa de un científico.

This paper addresses two essays that present a particular perspective about the married woman and their possible relations with the scientific activity and with the man of sciences, around the middle of the twentieth century in Argentina. The titles of the texts are: “The scientist´s wife” and “The married woman and the scientific investigation”, and were written by Olive Thomas de Lewis, wife of John Treharne Lewis -physiologist, Houssay´s disciple and member of the Argentinean Association for the Advancement of Science-. These essays were published in January and August of 1946 -respectively- in Science and Research, magazine that belongs to the Association. This article contextualizes the magazine and then inquiries into the woman´s representation, her relation with the scientific activity and her expected role as a scientist´s wife.
