El Cacique Cumbay. Historias de la guerra en la cordillera Chiriguana a principios del Siglo XIX

Abstract

La historia del Cacique chiriguano Cumbay, capitán grande del Ingre, ha sido cuidadosamente tratada por el historiador francés Thierry Saignes. Es nuestra intención agregar a esta historia a partir de ciertas fuentes que describen el período de armisticio y de guerra en los años 1806 y 1807. Analizaremos por un lado la tensión que se dio entre los distintos capitanes del Ingre: entre aquellos que favorecían la paz y aquellos que optaban por la guerra. Intentaremos matizar una interpretación clastreana del liderazgo de Cumbay, examinando su interacción con otros capitanes y su manera de mantener un delicado balance de poder entre las presiones internas y las externas. A su vez, mostraremos los distintos tipos de estrategias desarrolladas por Cumbay a la hora de enfrentarse con el expansionismo territorial borbónico, en las que convivieron tanto en los tratados de paz como los conflictos bélicos.

The story of Cumbay, a Chiriguano chief who was a great indigenous leader of the Ingre valley, was carefully written by the French historian Thierry Saignes. Our intention here is to add to that story with some historical data on the armistice and war periods of 1806-1807. On the one hand, we analyze the tensions between different indigenous captains of the Chiriguano foothills, some of which favored peace and some of which favored war. We will try to nuance Saignes interpretation of Cumbay's leadership, based on Clastres' theories, by focusing on his interactions with other captains and on his ability to maintain a delicate balance of power between both internal and external pressures.
