La concordancia comitativa en español: Caracterización general y valores discursivos

Abstract

En este trabajo se describe y explica la concordancia comitativa en el español (Con Juan fuimos al cine), estructura ligada al discurso oral y sus estrategias referenciales. Para ello, se caracteriza la construcción desde un punto de vista gramatical y pragmático, para luego señalar su distribución geográfica y las diferentes posibilidades de variación lingüística. A partir de este recorrido, se identifican tres valores básicos de la concordancia comitativa: a) un valor asociativo, que se distingue del plural asociativo por no implicar al oyente en el enunciado; b) un valor exclusivo, que incluye solo a la primera y la tercera personas; y c) un valor atenuador, que impersonaliza o neutraliza al sujeto de primera persona del singular. La extensión y productividad de esta construcción justifica la atención a este fenómeno, tanto para examinar sus propiedades sintácticas y semánticas, como para discutir su papel en la estructura informativa.

This paper focuses on the description and explanation of the so called comitative agreement in Spanish (Con Juan fuimos al cine Lit. ‘With Juan we went to the cinema’). This structure is associated with oral discourse and with the referential strategies it involves. In order to account for the behavior of this construction we characterize it from a grammatical and pragmatic approach. We also refer to its geographical distribution and to the linguistic variation it shows. By doing so, we identify three basic values for comitative agreement: a) an associative value, which differs from the associative plural in that it does not involve the listener in the utterance; b) an exclusive value, which only includes the first and the third person; and c) an attenuating value, which impersonalizes or neutralizes the first singular person subject. The extent and productivity of this construction make this phenomenon worth studying, not only to examine its syntactic and semantic properties, but also to discuss its role in the information structure.
