Libertad y propiedad en los debates de Putney

Abstract

Surgidos en el marco de la revolución civil inglesa, cuando el frente revolucionario liderado por Cromwell se comenzaba a quebrar, por una feroz interna sobre el carácter social y la finalidad política del levantamiento, los Debates de Putney (1647) son un fértil registro de la radicalidad que encarnó el siglo XVII en Inglaterra. No solo los audaces programas políticos (liberales, comunitaristas y pseudoanarquistas) que pudieron ser y no fueron quedaron allí plasmados, sino también una nueva idea de libertad nació en su seno. Una idea de libertad que estaría indisolublemente anexada a la moderna noción de propiedad del cuerpo y de la tierra, de la que Locke se haría eco. El presente trabajo pretende recoger y analizar las aristas de esta idea de propiedad como garante de la libertad en el marco de los debates, para mostrar finalmente cómo la misma se resignificó en la obra de John Locke. Idea que sería, entre otras cosas, parte central del programa político de la Restauración y pieza vital de la estructura teórico política de los programas republicanos revolucionarios posteriores.

Putney debates arose in the moment -in the English Civil revolution- that the front led by Cromwell began to break; through a fierce internal about the social and political character in the purpose of confrontation. The Putney debates are a fertile register of radicality embodied in England. Not only stayed there the bold political programs (liberals, communitarians and pseudo-anarchists) that could be and were not reflected, but also a new idea of freedom was born in its interior. A concept of freedom that would be inextricably attached to the modern notion of ownership of the body and the earth. This paper aims to collect and analyze the edges of this idea of ownership as a guarantor of freedom in the context of discussions, to finally show how it was resignified in the work of John Locke. An idea that would, among other things, central part of the political program of the Restoration and vital part of the theoretical political structure to republican revolutionaries subsequent programs.
