Abstract

El joven escritor francés Pierre Loti estuvo en la hoy chilena Isla de Pascua (Rapa Nui) en 1872. De allí surgió su primera publicación, la que con sus dibujos se difundió por el mundo entero. Aunque otros viajeros estuvieron antes y después, su Diario es una pieza crucial para entender la mirada europea al resto del mundo. La isla estaba cruzada en esos años por eventos tremendos como el esclavismo, la imposición religiosa, la prohibición de su cultura y lengua o la introducción del capitalismo salvaje.

The young French writer Pierre Loti was in today Chilean Easter Island (Rapa Nui) in 1872. From there he made his first publication, which with his drawings spread throughout the world. Although several others were there before and after, his journal is crucial to understanding the European look to the world. The island was crossed in those years by tremendous events such as slavery, religious imposition, prohibiting their culture and language, the introduction of wild capitalism.
