Guerra, crisis identitaria y búsqueda espiritual en la narrativa de J.D. Salinger

Abstract

En la presente investigación nos proponemos realizar una lectura sociocrítica de los temas de la guerra, la crisis identitaria y la búsqueda espiritual en la narrativa de J.D. Salinger. Restringiremos nuestro análisis sólo a aquellas obras del autor en que mejor se articulan los temas escogidos: “A Perfect Day for Bananafish” (1948) y “For Esmé – with Love and Squalor” (1950). Como motivación teórica, procuraremos solventar la carencia de perspectivas sociohistóricas de la que adolece la crítica salingeriana. Utilizaremos como marco teórico la teoría de Lucien Goldmann conocida como “estructuralismo genético”, la cual nos permitirá establecer un análisis cuya amplitud abarcará desde la comprensión (inmanente) de la estructura textual hasta la explicación (trascendente) de ésta por medio de su inclusión en estructuras significativas más amplias, tales como el contexto histórico y cultural de la época y la clase social a la que perteneciera el autor, así como el campo literario en que su obra ha llegado a canonizarse. Como resultado de nuestra investigación confirmaremos, en la obra de Salinger, la presencia de una visión del mundo que hemos dado en llamar “religante” y que mantiene con la visión del mundo correspondiente a la burguesía ilustrada norteamericana de la década del cincuenta una relación de homología: la visión del mundo presente en la obra de Salinger es consecuencia del enfrentamiento entre el autor y la sociedad de su época, confrontación que sólo puede resolverse mediante la construcción de una nueva visión del mundo que lidia con la problemática social e identitaria de la década del cincuenta y las consecuencias de la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

In the present article, we intend to perform a socio-critical reading of the topics of war, identitary crisis and spiritual search in J.D. Salinger’s narrative. We will restrain our analysis only to those works by the author in which the chosen topics are best articulated: “A Perfect Day for Bananafish” (1948) and “For Esmé – with Love and Squalor” (1950). As theoretical motivation, we seek to solve the lack of socio-historical perspectives suffered by the salingerian critic. We will use as theoretical frame Lucien Goldmann’s theory known as “genetic structuralism”, which will enable us to establish an analysis whose width includes the understanding (immanent) of the textual structure, as well as the explanation (transcendent) of this through its inclusion in wider significant structures, such as the historical and cultural context and the author’s social class, as well as the literary field in which his work has reached canonization. As a result of our investigation we will confirm, in Salinger’s work, the presence of a world view we call “relegating”, which maintains a homology relation with the American illustrated bourgeoisie of the fifties: the world view present in Salinger’s work is a consequence of the confrontation between the author and the society of his time, confrontation that can only be solved through the building of a new world view that deals with social and identity problems of the fifties and the Second World War consequences.
