Reflexiones preliminares en torno a las modulaciones épicas en Ysaïe le triste, roman del siglo XV

Abstract

Ysaïe le triste narra las biografías del hijo (Ysaïe) y del nieto (Marc) de Tristán e Iseo. Las proezas de los jóvenes tienen lugar en el mundo anárquico que se implanta luego de la definitiva desaparición del rey Arturo y de los grandes héroes de la Mesa Redonda. Así, la elección de un linaje y de una materia narrativa célebres –entre el público nobiliario medieval– legitima el relato, por cuanto el roman se emparienta con las dos leyendas que mayor seducción ejercieron desde el siglo XII en la Europa occidental, y que fueron entrelazadas en el Tristan en prose. No obstante la clara filiación temática del texto, esta circunstancia no le impide recurrir a algunos elementos y motivos característicos de los cantares de gesta, hecho que ratifica la interferencia mutua del discurso épico y del romanesque. El propósito de este artículo es analizar algunos pasajes del roman en los que ciertos componentes del discurso épico románico se manifiestan y reflexionar sobre las posibles motivaciones que llevaron al autor a incorporarlas a la historia.

Ysaïe le Triste relates the biographies of the son (Ysaïe) and grandson (Marc) of Tristan and Isolde. The exploits of these young people take place in the anarchic world that is implanted after the final disappearance of King Arthur and of the knights of the Round Table. Thus, the choice of a lineage and a famous narrative material legitimizes the story (among the French nobility), because the romance relates itself with the two greatest legends that seduced the European Western since the twelfth century and that were intertwined in the Tristan en prose. Notwithstanding the clear affiliation with the romance mode, this fact does not preclude the recourse to some elements and motifs characteristic of the “epic mode”, which confirms the fact of mutual interference between these modes (epic and romance). The purpose of this paper is to analyze some passages of Ysaïe le triste in which components of the epic discourse are evident in Ysaïe le triste. This fact engages us to reflect upon the possible motivations that led the author to incorporate them into the story.
