Consenso y negociación en torno al liderazgo de Casimiro Biguá (1869-1871)

Abstract

En el presente trabajo pretendemos analizar las relaciones interétnicas en el contexto social tehuelche, tanto entre sus diferentes parcialidades, como entre éstas y los denominados manzaneros, no perdiendo de vista el importante rol de liderazgo del cacique tehuelche Casimiro Biguá. El objetivo consiste en analizar la figura del mencionado líder mediante los diversos parlamentos, que se realizaron en el ámbito patagónico, en donde adquirió una importante delegación de facultades políticas y sociales que le permitieron posicionarse en el devenir de las relaciones interétnicas pampeano-patagónicas del período. Para el desarrollo del artículo tomaremos como base un trabajo realizado anteriormente en el cual nos centramos en un análisis de la implicancia socio-política de los parlamentos de la sociedad tehuelche en las relaciones fronterizas de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Siguiendo esta línea de estudio utilizaremos nuevamente la crónica del viajero y explorador inglés George Musters, quien entre 1869 y 1870 recorrió el territorio de Patagonia de sur a norte acompañando a una partida de tehuelches, dejando de esta forma una valiosa información.

In this article we aim at discussing the issue of ethnic leadership in relation to the interethnic relations of two Patagonian ethnic groups: the Tehuelche (in its different groups) and the Manzanero. This paper focuses on the figure of the Tehuelche Chief Casimiro Biguá and problematises aspects that constitute the ethnic leadership. The objective is to analyse Biguá’figure through a number of parliaments which were conducted in the Patagonia, and where the Chief gained political and social powers that allowed his position in the inter-ethnic Pampeano-patagonian relations of the period. This paper is based on previous work focused on the socio-political implications of the indigenous parliaments in the Tehuelche society during the second half of the nineteenth century. Following this line of study, we will use the chronicle by the traveler and English Explorer George Musters, who traversed the Patagonian territory from South to North, joining a Tehuelche community and, thus leaving valuable information between 1869 and 1870.
