Análisis curatorial de la Colección Tellechea, Mendoza (Argentina)

Abstract

El Museo Mineralógico “Prof. Manuel Tellechea” gozó de prestigio en la provincia de Mendoza (Argentina) durante la década de 1970 y, si bien tenía un perfil fundamentalmente mineralógico, su patrimonio era de naturaleza diversa. La falta de financiación a partir de 1981 significó el inicio de un largo período de deterioro hasta que, en el año 2006, los fondos del museo Tellechea fueron donados al Museo de Ciencias Naturales y Antropológicas “Juan Cornelio Moyano” de la provincia de Mendoza, iniciándose tareas de rescate que no se pudieron completar. Sobre la base del material revisado y con el objetivo de presentar las características de la Colección Tellechea, se realizó su análisis curatorial a partir de la evaluación de variables asociadas al manejo de colecciones y al nivel de representatividad mineralógica específica de la provincia de Mendoza en la colección. Ambos aspectos sugieren que, aunque el Museo Mineralógico “Prof. Manuel Tellechea” desarrolló durante su historia una importante actividad de exhibición y educación, no se abocó a la investigación y promovió el ingreso de material de manera abundante, pero no selectiva. El desequilibrio entre exhibición, investigación y conservación representa un desafío para la gestión curatorial del patrimonio que aún no ha sido recuperado.

The Mineralogical Museum “Prof. Manuel Tellechea” enjoyed a great prestige in Mendoza Province (Argentina) during the 1970s and, although it mainly had a mineralogical profile, its heritage was diverse. Lack of funding from 1981 meant a long period of decline until 2006, when museum Telllechea was donated to the Museum of Natural Sciences and Anthropology ”Juan Cornelio Moyano” (Mendoza Province) and a rescue task began, which unfortunately could not be completed. Based on the revised material and in order to present the characteristics of the Tellechea Collection, a curatorial analysis has been made, considering the evaluation of variables associated with the management of collections and the level of specific mineralogical representativeness of the Mendoza Province in the collection. Both aspects suggest that even though the Mineralogical Museum “Prof. Manuel Tellechea” developed an important activity of exhibition and education along its history, it not devoted itself to research and promoted the entry of abundant but not selected material. The imbalance between exhibition, research and conservation is a challenge for the curatorial management on heritage that has not yet been recovered.
