Arte y cultura: Hacia una teoría antropológica del arte(facto)

Abstract

Este artículo presenta un examen antropológico del vínculo entre el arte y la cultura. ¿Qué es el “arte” y qué la “cultura”? ¿En qué consiste la producción, la circulación y la recepción de la “obra de arte”? ¿Qué importancia tienen las dimensiones formal, funcional y semántica en el arte? ¿Cómo clasificar las artes? ¿Qué vínculo tiene el arte con el intelecto y con el sentimiento, con la religión, la fiesta, la política, la organización social, la tecnología, la propiedad, el patrimonio? Para intentar responder estas y otras preguntas semejantes, este artículo revisa buena parte de lo que se ha escrito sobre la materia y los presenta bajo la forma de una argumentación original. Comienza con una discusión en tres niveles del concepto de “cultura”, donde se otorga un papel preponderante al “artefacto”, y continúa con un examen del concepto de “arte” sosteniendo, por un lado, la inutilidad de nuestro concepto corriente para su aplicación transcultural y, por el otro, la posibilidad de dotarlo de valor antropológico si lo incluimos dentro de una teoría de los objetos construidos por el hombre. Trazadas estas coordenadas de cultura y arte(facto), se analiza la relación entre ambos términos en distintos contextos.

This article presents an anthropological examination of the link between art and culture. What is “art” and what is “culture”? How do the production, circulation and reception of the “work of art” take place? How important are the formal, functional and semantic dimensions in art? How to classify the arts? How does art become linked with the intellect and the feelings, with religion, festival, politics, social organization, technology, property, and heritage? To answer these and similar questions, this paper reviews much of what has been written on the subject to present it in the form of an original line of argument. Beginning with a discussion on three levels on the concept of “culture”, in which “artifacts” have a prominent role, and continues with an examination of the concept of “art”, stating on one hand, the futility of our current concept for transcultural application and, on the other hand, the possibility of providing it with anthropological value if it is included within a theory of man-made objects. Plotted these coordinates of culture and art(ifact), the relationship between the two terms is analyzed in different contexts.
