La oposición entre la Red y el Yo (1989-2009): análisis de una hipótesis sociológica de Manuel Castells

Abstract

La oposición entre la Red y el Yo es la fórmula principal que propone Manuel Castells a partir de 1989 para sintetizar su visión sobre la dinámica estructural de las sociedades contemporáneas. En el presente artículo analizamos los aspectos centrales de tal postulado, atendiendo en particular a la relación que establece con la cuestión del poder. La investigación nos permitirá descubrir que dicho vínculo, zigzagueante y desorientador en el plano explícito de su teoría social, promociona una concepción reduccionista y no relacional del poder, sustentada sobre cierto determinismo espacial. En el trabajo también analizamos las lógicas de articulación involucradas en la fórmula, la relación de esta última con las metáforas societales centrales, y finalmente el problema principal que plantea la oposición entre la Red y el Yo: la ruptura de los patrones de comunicación social.

The opposition between the Net and the Self is the main formula Manuel Castells proposes since 1989 to synthesize his view of the structural dynamic of contemporary societies. In this article we will analyze the main aspects of this postulate, focusing on the relationship established with the question of power. This research will allow us to discover that the mentioned bond, zigzagging and confusing in the explicit level of his social theory, promotes a reductionist and non-relational conception of power, supported by a certain spatial determinism. In this piece of work we also analyze the logics of articulation involved in the formula, its connection with the main social metaphors, and fi nally the main problem arising from the opposition between the Net and the Self: the breakingoff of social communication patterns.
