Madres criminales: aportes sobre el infanticidio y la criminalidad femenina bonaerense en clave sociodemográfica

Abstract

En 1906 se realizó en Argentina el primer Censo Penitenciario. Los resultadosdemostraron que las mujeres estaban condenadas, mayoritariamente, porinfanticidio. Estos casos preocuparon particularmente al Estado argentinodebido a la alta tasa de mortalidad infantil y la necesidad de repoblar elterritorio. El propósito de este trabajo será analizar a las infanticidas enrelación a las características sociales, económicas y demográficas de lasmujeres de la provincia de Buenos Aires, en general, y al resto de las mujerespresas, en particular. Nos interesa, puntualmente, indagar quiénes eran, lascaracterísticas compartidas y los motivos que las movilizaron a deshacerse delos recién nacidos.

In Argentina, the first Penitentiary Census was carried out in 1906. The results revealed that most of the female inmates had been condemned for infanticide. This fact was of great concern to the State because of high child mortality rates and the need to re-populate the territory. Our aim is to analyze these women in relation to the social, economic and demographic characteristics of women from the Province of Buenos Aires in general and to the rest of the female inmates, in particular. We are specifically interested in finding out who they were, the features they shared and the motives that pushed them to get rid of the newly born.
