Las tentativas coloniales francesas en Florida en el siglo XVI a través de la Narrativa de Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues

Abstract

Este trabajo explora los avatares de la frustrada colonización francesa en Florida, en la segunda mitad del siglo XVI. Se parte de un análisis sobre la representación, tomando como objeto la literatura de viajes del período, en un diálogo intenso con el contexto histórico en el cual fueron elaboradas esas representaciones, que incluyen textos e imágenes. La Narrativa de Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues, publicada en el segundo tomo de los Grandes Viajes de Theodoro de Bry (1591) se ofrece aquí por primera vez en español para abonar al conocimiento de los procesos de colonización de la modernidad temprana. Este valioso documento aporta importantes elementos para el análisis de las contiendas políticas y religiosas que traspasaron los límites oceánicos, como así también de la dinámica de contacto interétnico que tuvo lugar. En suma, el trabajo indaga en la construcción de la mirada de los franceses sobre los indígenas timucua, en una doble vinculación con las complejas alianzas entabladas con ellos durante el establecimiento colonial francés, por un lado, y con los discursos de promoción de un dominio colonial alternativo y superador del modelo ibérico, por otro.

This paper explores the difficulties found by the frustrated French attempt of colonization in Florida in the second half of the 16th century, focusing on the analysis of its representations and taking as an object of study the travel accounts of the period, in an intensive dialogue with the historical context in which the former (which include texts and images) were thought-out. The Narrative of Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues, published by Theodore de Bry in the second volume of Great Voyages (1591), is offered here for the first time in Spanish as a means to contribute to the knowledge of the processes of colonization which took place in the early Modern Age. This whortly document provides important elements in order to analyse the religious and political disputes that crossed the ocean’s boundaries, as well as the dynamic of interethnic contact that took place at the same time. In sum, the work examines the ways in which the French constructed their own representations about the Timucua Indians, taking into account the complex alliances established with them in times of the French colonial settlement, as well as the discourses of promotion of a colonial dominion that intended to be both alternative and superior to that of the Iberian model.
