“Si me quieres escribir…” Mujeres en la prensa cultural antifascista (Argentina, 1930-1940)

Abstract

A mediados de los años 30 en Argentina la responsabilidad de los intelectuales respecto de la situación política internacional despertaba un especial interés en la comunidad artística y literaria. Los grandes acontecimientos europeos —el ascenso del fascismo, la Guerra Civil Española y la Segunda Guerra Mundial— incidían directamente en el campo cultural argentino. Esta configuración histórica exigía una redefinición del intelectual como sujeto de intervención política. Las mujeres no fueron ajenas a dicho proceso: artistas y escritoras comenzaron a hacerse presente de formas novedosas en la esfera pública, ya sea pronunciándose sobre la situación internacional, o ensayando nuevos lenguajes expresivos para intervenir en los debates culturales. En este trabajo se analizarán algunas de esas singulares intervenciones femeninas: las colaboraciones de la escritora María Rosa Oliver, de la artista plástica Raquel Forner y de la fotógrafa Grete Stern en una serie de revistas antifascistas publicadas en Buenos Aires.

In the mid-1930s, the responsibility of intellectuals regarding the international political situation became a topic of particular interest in Argentina’s artistic and literary community. The great European political developments —the rise of fascism, the Spanish Civil War, and the Second World War— directly infl uenced the Argentine cultural fi eld. This new historical confi - guration generated a redefi nition of the intellectual as a subject of political intervention. Women were not immune to this process: female artists and writers began to participate in new ways in the public realm, whether in response to the international situation or by creating new expressive languages to intervene in cultural debates. In this paper we discuss some of these female interventions: contributions by the writer Maria Rosa Oliver, the visual artist Raquel Forner, and the photographer Grete Stern in a number of antifascist magazines published in Buenos Aires.
