Élenchos y Éros: El caso de Sócrates y Agatón en SMP. 199c-201a

Abstract

El propósito del presente trabajo es en primer término el relevamiento de los principales desarrollos conceptuales y argumentativos del ÉLENCHOS entre Sócrates y Agatón en SMP. 199c-201a, y su relación con los desarrollos de la teoría erótica del discurso de Sócrates/Diotima que prologa. A este respecto nos concentraremos en analizar cómo se elabora allí la pregunta sobre la naturaleza de ÉROS y se formulan, a modo de primera respuesta, afirmaciones sobre su carácter intencional, su carencia constitutiva en cuanto necesariamente inscrito en la temporalidad, y su tendencia a lo bueno y lo bello. Posteriormente, se complementa este análisis con el examen de este ejemplo de ÉLENCHOS en particular a la luz de diversas cuestiones de debate respecto al ÉLENCHOS en general. A este respecto se atiende especialmente a la conexión entre ÉLENCHOS y ÉROS en este pasaje del BANQUETE, en tanto el primero constituye una herramienta metodológica particularmente apropiada para, a la vez, enunciar las bases de la teoría platónica del ÉROS y estimular el surgimiento del amor por la verdad.

Here I aim to survey the key-concepts and main lines of reasoning in the elenchos between Socrates and Agathon at Smp. 199c-201a as well as their main links to the theory of eros which is developed at Socrates/Diotima’s speech afterwards. In this respect I analize in this section of the Symposium: a) the linguistic resources through which the question about eros’ nature is established in a precise, well-thought way; b) the implications of the main assertions which are made about eros as a first answer to these question: its intentional character; its inherent lacking condition because of its necesarily intwining in temporality; its tendency towards the beautiful and the good. Afterwards, I add a consideration of this particular example of elenchos in the light of various points of debate about elenchos in general. In this assessmet, among other things, I reflect on the links between elenchos and eros insofar as the first one is an appropriate tool both to establish the foundations of Plato´s theory of eros and to awaken in the interlocutor the love for truth.
