Dynamics of scientific change and cognitive science. An epistemological update

Abstract

Teniendo especialmente en cuenta el carácter joven y la diversidad que caracterizan las ciencias cognitivas, se exploran algunas propuestas en torno de la dinámica de teorías desde la filosofía general de las ciencias y se evalúa su aplicabilidad a este sector de la investigación científica. En primer lugar, distingo dos tipos de apelaciones al trabajo de Kuhn: por un lado, aplicaciones directas pero laxas a la historia de las ciencias cognitivas y, por otro lado, aplicaciones indirectas de aspectos de las ideas kuhneanas. En segundo lugar, critico su pertinencia apelando al papel secundario que en este campo juegan las teorías. Por último, defiendo la fertilidad de la noción de 'tradición de investigación' propuesta por Laudan, atendiendo al conjunto de rasgos idiosincráticos, previamente destacados, propios de las ciencias cognitivas.IMPORTANTE: Este trabajo es la traducción del artículo "Dynamics of scientific change: An Epistemological Update": ambas versiones fueron publicadas conjuntamente en el mismo número de Estudios de Psicología.

I explore two proposals on the dynamics of scientific change in the general philosophy of science and I evaluate the extent to which they can be applied in the cognitive sciences. I do this by paying special attention to the youth and diversity which characterize this field of scientific research. Firstly, I distinguish two kinds of uses of Kuhn's work: direct but loose applications of Kuhnean concepts to the history of cognitive science, on the one hand, and indirect applications of certain aspects of Kuhnean ideas, on the other hand. Secondly, I criticize their pertinence on the basis of the secondary role which theories play in the field. Finally, I defend the fertility of the concept of 'research tradition' proposed by Laudan, by focusing on the previously high-lighted set of idiosyncratic characteristics of the cognitive sciences.
