Una religión cívica para la Argentina finisecular: La construcción identitaria del primer Radicalismo en la provincia de Santa Fe (1894-1904)

Abstract

En el presente trabajo abordamos los procesos constitutivos de una identidad político partidaria durante los años formativos de la Unión Cívica Radical (UCR) –período que, con algunas discontinuidades, se extiende entre los levantamientos armados de 1893 y 1905. Inscribiéndolos en el registro más amplio de la cultura política argentina del cambio de siglo, nuestro trabajo focaliza en las estrategias de construcción de un conjunto de mitos, ritos y símbolos: en torno a la Revolución, los actos conmemorativos, la figura del mártir-caído, los motivos iconográficos derivados, entre otros. Prácticas y simbologías que darían cuerpo a una trama autointerpretativa de la UCR infundida por la voluntad de otorgar un halo de sacralidad a la propia acción política. Nuestro análisis se concentra para ello en un estudio de caso, el de la provincia de Santa Fe, en tanto la experiencia radical en este espacio regional presenta fisonomías que la justifican como matriz a partir de la cual indagar e interpretar dichos procesos y su impacto a escalas más amplias. En esa dirección, sostenemos aquí que esa construcción identitaria de los radicales santafesinos respondía a una doble necesidad luego de una derrota política: no sólo sumar nuevas voluntades para la UCR, sino también cohesionar las propias filas. Asimismo, la construcción de una memoria y un legado propios se presentó como susceptible a variaciones y resignificaciones, tal como se dio con la reorganización partidaria a partir de 1903.

In this paper we analyze the constitutive processes of partisan political identity during the formative years of the Radical Civic Union (UCR) — a period, with some discontinuities, that extended between the armed uprisings of 1893 and 1905. In the broader registry of the Argentinean political culture of the turn of the century, our work focuses on strategies for constructing a set of myths, rituals and symbols derived from the Revolution — the celebrations and the figure of the fallen martyr, among other iconographic motifs. These practices and symbols gave body to a self-interpretation by the UCR, which was infused by the will to bestow an aura of sacredness to its political action. Our analysis focuses on a case study of the province of Santa Fe, as radical experience in this regional space presents physiognomies justifying it as a matrix from which we can investigate and interpret these processes and their impact on a broader scale. Following this direction, we argue that the work of constructing an identity carried out by radicals in Santa Fe responded to two needs after a political defeat, not only to add new supporters to the UCR, but also to unite the ranks. Furthermore, the construction of a memory presented a legacy that was susceptible to variations and reinterpretations, as they occurred with the reorganization of the Party after 1903.
