Una storia di silenzi: Pazienti croniche di un ospedale psichiatrico nella provincia di Buenos Aires (1908-1949)

Abstract

In questo articolo ci occuperemo di un gruppo di pazienti croniche residenti nell Hospital Esteves di Lomas de Zamora, in provincia di Buenos Aires, tra il 1908 e il 1949. Queste donne, cui venne diagnosticata una malattia mentale, vissero all interno dell ospedale neuropsichiatrico fino alla morte. Il periodo preso in esame va dall inaugurazione dell Esteves nel 1908 fino al 1950, quando limpiego degli psicofarmaci modificò in profondità la vita quotidiana della struttura. Ci proponiamo di prendere in considerazione diverse variabili: la cronicità, la convivenza e, soprattutto, i problemi causati dalla lingua delle pazienti immigrate, sia per quel che riguarda la formulazione della diagnosi che ne determinò lingresso in ospedale, sia per quanto attiene alle relazioni con le altre pazienti. Le cartelle cliniche di queste donne sono cartelle di silenzi; permettono di ricostruirne la vita in maniera frammentaria, di abbozzarne solo alcuni tratti e qualche segno. Le loro individualità e soggettività scomparvero nel momento in cui fecero il proprio ingresso all Esteves e vennero trasformate in un etichetta diagnostica, in una cartella clinica o in un cumulo di sintomi che, spesso, non arrivarono nemmeno ad assumere una identità nosologica.

This article talks about a group of chronic patients at Esteves Hospital of Lomas de Zamora, in the province of Buenos Aires between 1908 and 1949. We chose this particular group of women because, regardless of their personal characteristics and their different backgrounds, they were all diagnosed with a mental illness and lived in a neuropsychiatric hospital until they died. The time period selected is from the opening of the institution, until the advent of psychotropic drugs, that made the everyday life in the hospital to change. We are interested in different variables: chronicity, coexistence with other patients, the impact of language in this coexistence and in their diagnoses. The medical records of these patients are stories of silences that allow us only to make a collage with pieces of broken stories. Singularities and subjectivities disappeared when entering Esteves and they became a “diagnosis stamp” in a medical file, or a group of symptoms without a nosological identity.
