dc.description.abstract
dc.description.abstract
Considering the centrality of translation in the field of social and human sciences in Ar-gentina, this article analyzes from a sociological perspective the logics that guide the translation and publishing of books in order to understand the differential values and modes of intellectual value formation of the different languages and national origins. Based on the statistical analysis of bibliographical data and the analysis of interviews, this study compares the volumes and dynamics of French and English translation, the two most translated languages, and explores the system of conditions that leads publishers to prefer a languagebefore other, and the ways in which the structure and functioning of the publishing field have effects on the valuation of the intellectual production of different languages and countries. The first finding of this work, that confers a special interest to the Argentine case, is that here, unlike what happens in most of the world where English has become the dominant scientific language, French and France continue to be the main referents of this segment of the publishing field: during the period studied (1990-2011), the number of books translated from French were more than twice as many as those translated from English.
