Gestionar los papeles, la fidelidad y los afectos: el marqués de Grimaldo y la abdicación de Felipe V

Abstract

La abdicación de Felipe V en su hijo primogénito Luis I ha sido interpretada como uno de los acontecimientos centrales del reinado del primer Borbón hispano, debido a los debates acerca de los motivos que se encontraban detrás de la opción de la abdicación. En los últimos años, novedosos trabajos han contribuido a replantear el papel de los principales ministros de Luis I, así como el propio significado ceremonial de la abdicación. Este artículo tiene dos propósitos: en primer lugar, se busca reconsiderar el secreto de la abdicación como un hecho que únicamente conocerían Felipe V, Isabel de Farnesio y el confesor Daubenton y, en segundo término, discutir el propio papel de Grimaldo y sus enfrentamientos con el mariscal de Tessé, gracias a unos documentos poco consultados.

Philip’s abdication in favor of his first-born Lewis I has been understood as one of the main events of the first HIspanic Borbon’s reign because of the debates around the motivations behind the option to abdícate. During the last years novel Works have contributed to rethinking the role of Lewis I’s main ministers, as well as the cery ceremonial significance of the abdication. This article has two aims. Firstly, I propose to reconsider the secreto of the abdication as an event that was know only by Philip V, Elizabeth Farnese, and the confessor Daubenton. Secondly, I discuss Grimaldo’s role and his conflicts with the Marical of Tessé, drawing on documents barely consuletd.
