Política, cultura y el "problema de las drogas" en la Argentina, 1960-1980s

Abstract

Desde las perspectivas de la historia cultural y política, este ensayo analiza cómo el así llamado"problema de las drogas" emergió en la Argentina de la década de 1960 en estrechavinculación con los imperativos políticos de la Guerra Fría, en particular con las doctrinasde seguridad nacional. Asimismo, muestra que la figura del toxicómano se entretejió conlas ansiedades generadas por la irrupción de los y las jóvenes en la escena política y cultural.Un amplio espectro de actores proyectó sobre el toxicómano los rasgos socioculturalesdel "enemigo interno" al mismo tiempo que estableció límites para la sociabilidad y lamovilización política de los jóvenes en general, tanto en contextos civiles como militares.

From the perspectives of social and political history, this essay analyzes how the so-called “drug problem” emerged in 1960s Argentina in connection with the political imperatives of the Cold War, notably with the doctrines of national security. This essay shows, likewise, that the figure of the toxicómano (addict) was entwined with the anxieties that the irruption of young men and women in the political and cultural milieus awoke in broad segments of Argentine society. A wide range of actors projected onto the toxicómano the sociocultural characteristics of the “enemy within” at the same time that it set limits to the sociability and political mobilization of young people at large, whether the regimes were civilian or military ones.
