La Revolución Militar Norteamericana (1861-1865)

Abstract

En el presente artículo intentamos conceptualizar la Guerra Civil en los EEUU (1861-1865) desde el punto de vista político-militar. Primeramente ubicamos el conflicto en el contexto de varias encrucijadas norteamericanas del siglo XIX: las diferencias entre el Norte y el Sur, la expansión (hacia el oeste y otras direcciones), las disputas dentro del sistema político, la esclavitud y la constitución del Estado Nación. A partir de allí nos abocaremos a los obstáculos para conceptualizar la Guerra Civil. Retomaremos críticamente el planteo corriente en la historiografía actual, que califica a esta contienda como una guerra total. Mostramos que existen cuestiones conceptuales que limitan tal caracterización y, frente a ello, proponemos considerar a la Guerra Civil como una revolución militar, donde tuvieron lugar cambios sustanciales en el tamaño de las fuerzas armadas, en la táctica, en la estrategia y en el impacto de los fenómenos bélicos sobre la sociedad.

In the present article we attempt to conceptualize the North American Civil War (1861-1865) from a politicalmilitary perspective. First we locate the conflict in the context of several American political crossroads of the nineteenth century: the differences between north and south, the expansion (westward and toward other directions), disputes within the political system, slavery and the constitution of the nation-state. Subsequently, we review the characteristics of this peculiarly destructive and intense conflagration, which has similarities with the world wars of the twentieth century. Thereafter we will focus on the obstacles to conceptualize the Civil War. We will retake critically the current pose in present historiography, which describes civil strife as a total war. We will show that there are conceptual issues that restrict such characterization, and to address this, we propose to consider the Civil War as a military revolution where substantial changes occurred in the size of the armed forces, tactics, strategy and the impact of war phenomena on society.
