La palabra y los silencios en una novela de Jesús Urzagasti

Abstract

En este trabajo analizo las diferentes modulaciones del silencio y sus vínculos con la palabra en el país del silencio (1987), del escritor boliviano Jesús Urzagasti (1941-2013). A partir de los conceptos de memoria colectiva larga y corta de Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui, trabajo los puntos de confluencias y las yuxtaposiciones que surgen entre ambas a partir de tres categorías: el silencio impuesto, el silencio necesario y el silencio solidario. Escrita durante los últimos anos de la dictadura de Luis García Meza, el silencio no sólo se vincula a las mordazas impuestas por el poder político, sino que también, se convierte en un mecanismo de resistencia y de encuentro con el prójimo para enfrentar una historia de opresión y sometimiento.

In this study I analyze the different modulations of silence and their relationship with a word in the book titled En el país del silencio (1987) written by the Bolivian writer Jesús Urzagasti (1941-2013). Using the concepts of long and short collective memory developed by Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui, I focus on the points of confluence and juxtapositions that arise between the two within three categories: imposed, necessary and supportive silence. The novel was written during the end of Luis García Meza’s dictatorship and silence is not only related to the gag rules imposed by the political power but it also turns into a mechanism of resistance and meeting with the others to deal with a history of oppression and submission.
