Antisemitismo, antijudaísmo y xenofobia: conceptos y contextos en la Antigüedad y la Alta Edad Media

Abstract

En el artículo se presentan los alcances y las limitaciones del concepto antisemitismo. Se analiza la forma en la que se lo ha usado para explicar diversos periodos históricos, poniendo la lupa en la Antigüedad y el Medioevo e incluyendo y problematizando, también, las categorías de antijudaísmo y judeofobia. Por último se estudian casos de hostilidad hacia los judíos, siempre en el marco de la Antigüedad y del Medioevo, con el fin de aprehender la especificidad de cada discurso y contexto. En la conclusión se sugieren posibles usos, acorde a los diversos contextos, para los conceptos de antisemitismo, antijudaísmo y xenofobia.

The present study is concerned with the scope and limitations of the term Anti-Semitism. I analyze how Anti-Semitism was employed to explain different historical periods, mainly Antiquity and the Middle Ages. I also present the notions of Anti-Judaism and Judeophobia. Finally I analyze the hostility against the Jews during those historical periods in order to understand the specificity of each discourse and context. In the conclusions I suggest possible uses of the terms Anti-Semitism, Anti-Judaism and Xenophobia, according to each context.
