Adaptaciones y apropiaciones en una cultura textual de frontera. Impresos misionales del Paraguay Jesuítico

Abstract

En 1700, los jesuitas crearon la primera imprenta de la región del Rio de la Plata, la cual operó en las misiones guaraníes durante 27 años, imprimiendo varios libros doctrinales, lingüísticos e históricos. Solo la mitad de dichos libros fue localizada en diferentes bibliotecas del mundo. Hallazgos recientes sugieren que estos libros circularon por las provincias sudamericanas de la Compañía de Jesús y fueron usados en diferentes regiones de acción misionera. No existe una tipología de libros impresos en las misiones guaraníes hasta la fecha. Primero, este artículo presenta una caracterización general de la actividad de la imprenta misionera en las reducciones guaraníes. Segundo, explora el corpus y propone una aproximación a su clasificación y análisis. Tercero, propone algunas interpretaciones sobre la circulación y recepción de estos textos en el contexto de la producción cultural misionera.

In 1700, the Jesuits established the fi rst printing press in the Rio de la Plata region, which operated in the Guaraní missions for twenty-seven years, printing several doctrinal, linguistic and historic books. Only half of the books have been located in different libraries and archives throughout the world. Recent fi ndings suggest that these books used to circulate throughout the South American provinces of the Society of Jesus and were used in diff erent regions of missionary action. An exhaustive typology of the books printed in the Guarani missions does not exist to date. First, this article presents a general characterization of the activity of the missions’ press in the Guarani reductions. Second, it explores the corpus and proposes an approach for its classifi cation and analysis. Th ird, it proposes some interpretations about the circulation and reception of these texts in the context of the missions’ cultural production.
