Paideia y poder imperial en Amiano Marcelino

Abstract

En un estudio muy reciente de la imagen de los reinados de Valentiniano y Valente en la obra de Amiano Marcellino, el investigador holandés Jan Willem Drijvers considera que una de las principales razones que impulsan al historiador tardoantiguo a presentar una caracterización negativa de estos emperadores ilirios es su falta de paideia. Es la misma la que -según el juicio de Amiano- resulta en un estilo de gobierno que no respeta los códigos culturales básicos de las elites tardorromanas, como la moderación y el honor, y explica su ejercicio autoritario y violento del poder. En el presente trabajo se pretende profundizar la línea de indagación sugerida por Drijvers, aplicándola al conjunto de la obra de Amiano.

In a recent study of the image of the reigns of Valentinian and Valens in the work of Ammianus, Dutch researcher Jan Willem Drijvers considered that one of the main reasons behind the negative characterization of these Illyrian emperors in Ammianus’ work is their lack of paideia. According to the judgment of Ammianus, this lack of paideia results in a style of government that does not respect the basic cultural codes of the late Roman elites, such as moderation or honor. The same reason explains also their authoritarian and violent exercise of power. The present work follows this line of inquiry suggested by Drijvers and applies it to the whole of Ammianus’ historical work.
