"I was, after all, a foreigner": Una reflexión en torno a un continente inicialmente vacío de un "otro" (Antártida, siglo XX)

Abstract

La exploración del continente antártico, el encuentro con este territorio inauguran un nuevo campo de reflexión en torno a la alteridad. Un espacio administrado por un interrogante, ¿qué sucede en aquellos nuevos territorios donde no existe un “Otro”, donde no existe un Otro esencialmente otro? Este nuevo escenario, este continente inicialmente vacío de un Otro, nos recuerda el carácter construido y contingente de la alteridad. La alteridad ya no entendida como esencia, como exterioridad, como condición necesaria para la reflexión en torno a un Otro sino como oportunidad-excusa para hacerlo. Para esto indagaremos en una serie de encuentros entre científicos y balleneros ocurridos en Antártida a principios del siglo XX. Centrando nuestra atención en el encuentro y la convivencia que tuvieron lugar entre los integrantes de la expedición científica, conocida bajo el nombre de “Cope Expedition” (1920- 1921) y la tripulación de embarcaciones balleneras pertenecientes a la compañía noruega Sydhavet A/S. Realizaremos esta aproximación, a través del diario de viaje escrito por uno de sus integrantes -Thomas Wyatt Bagshawe- y publicado bajo el título “Two Men in the Antarctic”, casi 20 años luego del viaje. La intención de este trabajo será explorar este encuentro como un momento de producción de una alteridad, centrada en los balleneros como una posible otredad no nativa, una otredad no esencial. Interrogándonos acerca de la forma en que 'el Otro' es representado, así como los modos y medios en que esta representación es construida a través del relato.

The exploration of Antarctica, the encounter with this territory opened a new field of though on otherness. A field around the question; What happens in those new territories where there is not an "Other”? This new scenario, a continent initially absent of an Other, reminds us of the constructed and contingent nature of otherness. Otherness no longer understood as an essence, as an exteriority, as a necessary condition for though on otherness but as an opportunity and an excuse to do it. For this we will explore a series of encounters between scientists and whalers in Antarctica in the early twentieth century, as a fertile field of reflection on otherness. Here, we will analyze the encounters and coexistence between members of the scientific expedition "Cope Expedition" (1920-1921) and the crew of the Norwegian company Sydhavet A / S. For this we will analyze the diary written by one of the scientific expedition members -Thomas Wyatt Bagshawe- published 20 years later under the title "Two Men in the Antarctic". The aim of this paper is to explore this encounter as a moment of production of alterity, focusing on whaling as a possible non-native otherness, a non-essential otherness. Exploring how 'the Other' is represented, and the ways in which this representation is constructed through story.
