In addition to the liberal tradition of politics, the theory of deliberative democracy of J. Habermas is also related to republicanism, discursively adapting some of the fundamental principles of this conception of the politics. In this context, there is analyzed the way in which the above mentioned theory incorporates the principle of popular sovereignty of J. J. Rousseau. The aim is to show how the “discursive transformation” that Habermas makes of this principle, allows explicit part of the contributions that the deliberative politics can make for the improvement of the democratic quality, without incurring in the objections that might be realized from the liberal point of view.
