Gentlemen, gauchos y modernización. Una lectura del proyecto de la Sociedad Fotográfica Argentina de Aficionados

Abstract

This article analyses different aspects of the photographic practice carried on by the Sociedad Fotográfica Argentina de Aficionados at the end of the 19th century. In a general absence of debates about the documentary or artistic status of photography, the individual or collective authorship of photographs reveal a lot about the different conceptions and possibilities of photography as a medium. In first place, this paper studies the construction and circulation of the SFAA’s documental archive and the links this society established with state and artistic institutions. Then, it examines the rural series of pictures taken by the amateur Francisco Ayerza and the purpose of illustrating an unfinished edition of José Hernandez’s El gaucho Martín Fierro. The text focuses on the role of these images concerning topics like the gaucho, the national and iconographic tradition, photography as an art and text illustration. In order to do so, we punctually analyse the rich circulation of these series in the periodical press of its time and the critical discourses they activated

El artículo analiza distintos aspectos de la práctica fotográfica desarrollada en el seno de la Sociedad Fotográfica Argentina de Aficionados a fin de siglo XIX. Ante un contexto general de ausencia de debate sobre el carácter documental o artístico de la fotografía, las designaciones de autoría grupal o individual de las imágenes de la Sociedad en espacios de archivo o exhibición resultan un elemento elocuente para aproximarse a las diferentes concepciones respecto de ella. Así, se estudian en primer lugar la formación y difusión del archivo fotográfico de la entidad y los vínculos y colaboraciones con instituciones estatales y artísticas. En una segunda parte del texto se analizan fotografías realizadas por el aficionado Francisco Ayerza y su lazo con una edición inconclusa de El gaucho Martín Fierro, de José Hernández. A partir de allí el texto se centra sobre el lugar de éstas en relación con el gaucho, el campo, la tradición nacional y la iconográfica y la ilustración de textos. Para ello se hace foco, particularmente, sobre la nutrida circulación de esas fotografías en diferentes publicaciones periódicas y sobre los discursos críticos que suscitaron
