Most researchers studying rural population of Santiago del Estero presuppose the existence of a peasant sector. Returning to an old debate between "campesinistas" and "descampesinistas”, this article questions this characterization from the analysis of a set of families form Atamisqui, Loreto and Figueroa departments where, according to some authors, would focus as much farming units in the province. It is held as the main hypothesis that behind the peasant category it is hides, mainly, the rural laborer with land and to a lesser extent, the rural petty bourgeoisie and the semi-proletariat.
