This study presents an initial investigation into crop (barley and soybean) monitoring using vegetation optical depth (VOD) retrieved from the NASA Soil Moisture Active Passive mission (SMAP). VOD was consistent with Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and latent heat flux (LE) from Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) within the southeastern area of the Argentine Pampas. Preliminary results reveal the potential of L-band VOD as a tool for monitoring water crops condition, demonstrating relevant synergies with traditional vegetation indicators.
