Atenuación de las crecidas por los humedales del Bajo Paraguay

Abstract

Esta contribución resalta la importancia de los humedales del Bajo Paraguay en la atenuación del escurrimiento durante las riadas considerando que la vegetación produce una fuerte interferencia durante las inundaciones, según su intensidad, y la permanencia del agua sobre el valle de inundación. Se consideró el tramo del río entre Asunción y la confluencia Paraguay-Paraná, utilizando la serie hidrológica 1980-1988 para datos de caudal y de volumen. La diferencia entre ambos fue de: -25-30% cuando las inundaciones ocurrieron luego de un período de aguas bajas muy largo y de sólo: -5% entre ambas localidades, cuando las inundaciones se repiten con intervalos muy cortos. Este cambio en la amortiguación de la onda de creciente, se produce por la muerte de la vegetación herbácea de la planicie de inundación.

This contribution deals with the importance of the flood plain wetlands of the Low Paraguay riverine system in the attenuation of the runoff, considering that the vegetation produces an a fast interference during the floods according to their intensity and permanency on the flood plain valley. The river tract between Asunción and the Paraguay/ Paraná Rivers confluence were considered using the hydrological series 1980-1988, on the runoff and volume values. The differences between both places was of -25-30% when the floods occurred after a very long period of low waters and of only -5% among both sections, when the floods repeated with very short intervals. This loss in the wave attenuation effect is a consequence of the death of the herbaceous vegetation during the extraordinary floods.
